My four times great grand father John Joy was born in the late
eighteenth century in the Shipbourne area of Kent.
Two generations later in 1860 his grandson William Joy born 1835
Hadlow Kent, moved to Godstone in Surrey where he
worked in the hearthstone
quarry and gravel pitts.
William and his family lived in Godstone for several decades and
later on one of his Son’s Albert Joy moved to Reigate
With his wife Rose
and family, where he worked as foreman at another hearthstone
mine at the base of Collie Hill.
The family later moved into number 5 the Clears one of a number
of new houses built about 1910 for the work force Of the Hearthstone
mine.
Albert joined the Royal Engineers and played his part in the Great
war, where he is said to have built bridges under
Enemy fire, during
which he received many wounds caused by shrapnel of which many
pieces where stuck in his body throughout
the rest of his life.
Fortunately he was one of the lucky soldiers to survive the war,
and returned home where he continued to work in
The hearthstone mine
right up until his death in 1934
age 62.
After his Death the mine was worked right up untill the 1960's
by many of his son's and gransons including my
granfather Frederick
joy and my Father Eric Joy, who tells of as young boy ridding
on the mine ponies that where used to pull
small rail mounted
carts, transporting
the hearthstone out of the mine.
